Numerical investigation of losses in a double-suction multistage centrifugal pump and its mitigation using baffle plates

The flow in a double-suction twin-volute five-stage centrifugal pump is studied numerically using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations. performance at various rates obtained are compared with the theoretically results. deterioration were investigated to find losses associated design of components. stage-wise analysis revealed hydraulic second-stage impeller due highly swirled exiting from first stage twin-volute. fluid have high circumferential velocity than its radial component leading pre-swirl inlet 2 impeller. In order regulate pre-swirl, baffle plates installed exit Three plate configurations and their effects on performances compared. vertical configuration improved efficiency by 1.36% head 6.04% while horizontal them 2.42% 5.96% respectively. 4-plate only small margin. installation also both off-design conditions. horizontally then tested angles. 300° clock-wise increased 9.08% 3.87%.
